Why this Brittany Ferries offer is worth checking

This is a good offer if you want more than a day trip, but do not need a full week away. Five days is enough for a proper Normandy or Brittany break: a few nights near the coast, a city stop in Caen, Bayeux or Saint-Malo, or a relaxed loop through western France with your own car.

The big advantage is that you arrive with your own vehicle. That makes the offer especially interesting for couples, families, dog owners and anyone who wants to pack properly without airport luggage rules. For a short French road trip, having your own car on arrival can make the journey simpler than flying and renting a car locally.

FerryGoGo tip: do not judge this offer only by the headline fare. The best route depends on where you live in the UK, where you are heading in France and whether you prefer a shorter daytime crossing or an overnight sailing that saves hotel time.

5-day France offer prices by route

The lowest prices vary by route group. These are the Brittany Ferries 5-day fare prices shown at the time of checking.

The family price is based on two adults and two children under 15 travelling with a car. Reserved seats are included on overnight sailings, subject to availability. Cabins cost extra, and on overnight routes we would still check the cabin price before deciding whether the fare is genuinely good value for your trip.

Which route should you choose?

The right route matters as much as the discount. A cheap crossing can still be the wrong choice if it leaves you with a long drive on the French side. Use the route first, then check the price.

If you are mainly choosing between the Brittany Ferries routes from Portsmouth, start with our Portsmouth to France ferry guide. It compares Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre and Saint-Malo in one place, which is often more useful than looking at the offer price alone.

Portsmouth to Caen: the strong Normandy all-rounder

Portsmouth to Caen is often the easiest Brittany Ferries option for a short Normandy break. It works well for Caen, Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, the Suisse Normande and onward driving towards western France. For many travellers from southern England, it is the most balanced choice: not too long, not too far west, and practical for a 5-day itinerary.

Portsmouth to Cherbourg: useful for the Cotentin and flexible plans

Portsmouth to Cherbourg is a practical route if you are heading for the Cotentin peninsula, western Normandy or want a useful alternative to Caen. We have sailed this Brittany Ferries route ourselves on Santoña, and the main lesson was simple: flexibility can matter. A flexible ticket can be worth considering if your plans are not fixed.

Read our Portsmouth to Cherbourg experience on Santoña.

Portsmouth to Le Havre: useful for Normandy, the Seine valley and Paris

Le Havre can be a good fit if your short break points towards eastern Normandy, Honfleur, Étretat, Rouen or even Paris. It is less of a classic Brittany holiday route, but for the right itinerary it can save unnecessary driving after arrival.

Poole to Cherbourg: a shorter crossing from the central south coast

Poole to Cherbourg is worth checking if Poole is easier for you than Portsmouth, especially from Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset or parts of the south-west. It is a straightforward way into Normandy and can work nicely for a compact 5-day trip.

Portsmouth to St Malo: best when the port is part of the trip

Saint-Malo is one of the more appealing ferry arrivals in France. This route makes most sense if you are heading for Brittany, northern Brittany beaches, Dinard, Cancale, Mont Saint-Michel or the wider west. It is not the shortest way to France, but it can feel more like part of the holiday.

We have also travelled the Saint-Malo to Portsmouth route and found it one of the stronger Brittany Ferries crossings for the overall travel experience, not just the transport.

Read our Saint-Malo to Portsmouth ferry experience.

Plymouth to Roscoff: best for western Brittany

Plymouth to Roscoff is the route to check if your trip starts in Devon or Cornwall, or if your French destination is western Brittany. It is less logical for Normandy or Paris, but very useful for Finistère, the Breton coast and slower, scenic short breaks.

Who this offer is best for

  • Couples planning a short France break: the headline £204 return fare is built around a car and up to two people.
  • Families who want to take their own car: the family fare can make sense when you add luggage, car seats, beach kit and the cost of car hire after flying.
  • Dog owners: pets can travel from £35 each way, although pet cabins, kennels or vehicle arrangements can affect availability and cost.
  • Travellers outside the Dover-Calais corridor: Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth can be much more convenient if you live in the south, south-west or west of England.
  • Short-break road trippers: five days gives you enough time to make the crossing feel worthwhile without turning it into a full holiday.

When this offer may not be the best option

This is not automatically the cheapest way to France for every traveller. If you are heading to Calais, Lille, Belgium, the Netherlands or north-east France, the Dover-Calais ferry or LeShuttle may still be more logical. The Brittany Ferries offer is strongest when the French arrival port helps your actual trip.

For the broader route picture, compare this with our ferries to France from the UK guide. That page is better if you are still deciding between the Short Straits, Brittany Ferries, LeShuttle and other UK-France options.

It is also worth checking the final price carefully if you need a cabin, are travelling with a tall or long vehicle, towing a trailer, taking pets or adding extra passengers. These are normal ferry extras, but they can change the value of a headline fare quickly.

What is included and what costs extra?

The from-price is based on a standard car up to 5m long and 1.83m high, plus up to two people. The offer includes the ETS surcharge, but additional charges may apply depending on your vehicle, passengers and onboard choices.

  • Included: return ferry travel for the eligible vehicle and passengers in the offer band.
  • Included on overnight sailings: reserved seats, subject to availability.
  • Extra: cabins and some accommodation upgrades.
  • Extra: pets, from £35 each way.
  • Extra: trailers, extra passengers and vehicles over the standard size.
  • Excluded: vehicles over 6m long and 2.6m high.
  • Phone booking fee: Brittany Ferries lists a £20 service charge for bookings made through the Contact Centre.

Cabins and ticket flexibility can change the value of this offer quickly, especially on overnight sailings. Our Brittany Ferries cabins, tickets and upgrades guide explains when a cabin, reserved seat or Flexi ticket is worth considering.

Small print to know before booking

This is an offer for new bookings only and is subject to a limited and variable allocation. Full payment is required at the time of booking. The same number of people must travel both ways, and the offer cannot be combined with another offer or promotion.

Club Voyage members may receive an additional saving on these fares, but check the current Brittany Ferries terms before relying on it. The earlier 20% Club Voyage campaign for April to June 2026 is no longer the active travel window, and the live terms we checked now refer to an additional 5% member saving on these prices.

FerryGoGo verdict

This is a solid short-break offer if you use the route well. For Normandy, Brittany and western France, sailing with Brittany Ferries can be more comfortable and more direct than forcing every France trip through Dover-Calais. The real value is not just the £204 headline fare, but the combination of taking your own car, landing closer to the right part of France and having enough time away to make the crossing worthwhile.

Our advice: compare the route first, then check the fare. Portsmouth to Caen or Cherbourg will suit many Normandy trips, Saint-Malo is better for a Brittany-focused break, and Roscoff is the one to check for western Brittany. Add cabins, pets and vehicle size before deciding whether the offer is the best deal for your trip.
