Helsingor-Helsingborg

About the Helsingborg Ferry

The shortest crossing between Denmark and Sweden is the route between Helsingรธr and Helsingborg. The ferry to Helsingborg takes only 20 minutes, and upon arrival, you can easily continue your journey.

This crossing is particularly popular because it is cheaper than the ร˜resund Bridge to Sweden, although the bridge is faster.

Travelling via Puttgarden-Rรธdby?

If you are driving to Helsingborg, you can significantly shorten your road journey by taking the ferry from Puttgarden to Rรธdby! This is clearly shown on our route map below. Additionally, you will avoid an expensive toll bridge.

You can use the booking module and select a place of departure to Sweden. If you're coming from the continent and heading to Sweden you should either choose Denmark or Germany as departure.

Ferry Guide Helsingรธr-Helsingborg

Are you about to plan your trip to Sweden? Great! We have some useful information to help you.

The ferry Service in Brief

The Helsingรธr-Helsingborg ferry departs north of Copenhagen. You need to be at the departure port at least 15 minutes in advance, and then you will sail to Sweden in 20 minutes. There are departures 24/7, with at least 50 crossings per day. This route is particularly popular because it is cheaper than the toll bridge between Denmark and Sweden. After all, a holiday in Scandinavia is expensive enough!

Travel to the Netherlands first:

In most cases, you will first need to travel to the Netherlands. This can be done via three ferry routes: Hull to Rotterdam, Newcastle to Amsterdam, or Harwich to Hook of Holland. Although travelling via France is an option, we find the Netherlands route to be more convenient due to the shorter distance.

From the Netherlands, you will then need to continue your journey to Germany or Denmark.

Ferry Costs

A significant reason to choose this route over the bridge is, as mentioned, the price. As a guide, you can expect the following costs:

  1. A regular car on the ferry costs 199DKK (approximately ยฃ20.30)
  2. A car using the bridge costs 455DKK (approximately ยฃ46.41)

Considering these costs, the ferry is the cheaper option. However, it's important to know how to get to the ferry, as this may also affect the total price of your trip. There are several ways to travel to Helsingรธr:

  • Via the Puttgarden-Rรธdby crossing,ย The most popular and straightforward route is the Puttgarden-Rรธdby route (from โ‚ฌ50.50). This ferry service runs from Germany to the Danish island of Lolland, which is connected by bridges to Zealand, where Helsingรธr is located. We recommend this route because it saves significant travel time and avoids a long detour. After this ferry, you can choose the economical Helsingรธr-Helsingborg ferry or the ร˜resund Bridge.
  • Via the Rostock-Gedserย crossing,ย Rostock-Gedserย is an option but less attractive for British travellers as it involves a longer drive and a longer crossing.
  • Driving throughย Denmark:ย Forย those who prefer a long drive over taking a ferry, you can travel towards Copenhagen via Hamburg and Kolding. This is a much longer drive and has the additional cost of the toll bridge between Nyborg and Halsskov (the Great Belt Bridge or Storebรฆltsbroen), which costs โ‚ฌ34 for a car.

Puttgarden-Rรธdby and Onwards to Sweden

If you decide to take the Puttgarden-Rรธdby route, Scandlines offers combination tickets. We have researched all prices and identified the most economical ways to travel.

The Two Cheapest Options Are…

Based on an average car with four passengers, the following steps will help you travel as cheaply as possible:

Puttgarden-Rรธdby + Helsingรธr-Helsingborg

  1. Book Puttgarden-Rรธdby separately with Scandlines (from ยฃ43)
  2. Book Helsingรธr-Helsingborg with Oresundslinjen (from ยฃ23)
    = Total:ย ยฃ66

Puttgarden-Rรธdby + ร˜resund Bridge

  1. For Puttgarden-Rรธdby and the ร˜resund Bridge, the cheapest option is to book them together through Scandlines
    = Total:ย ยฃ79,50ย (estimated time saving: 35 to 45 minutes)

Does This Also Apply to Motorhomes and Caravans?

For travellers with a motorhome or caravan, the same advice generally applies. Still, the relative difference is so small (ยฃ11ย on an amount ofย ยฃ205) that we recommend the combination ticket with the ร˜resund Bridge.

We hope that the above costs help you make an informed decision. However, we have more useful tips and facts worth considering.

  • If you are heading to Halmstad/Gothenburg or Jรถnkรถping, the ferry is the ideal option for your onward journey.
  • When booking your ticket, you might not see the name Helsingรธr but the place name Elsinore. This is the English name for Helsingรธr so that you can select it without worry.
  • The Helsingรธr-Helsingborg ferry is one of the few fully electric ferries.
  • Within walking distance of the departure port in Denmark, you will find Kronborg Castle. It's worth skipping a few ferries to visit!
  • Forsea previously operated this crossing. Although the web address forseaferries.com is still used, the ร˜resundsLinjen logo now appears on the website.
