Ferries to Sweden: routes, gateways and the best way in
Choose the Swedish gateway before choosing the ferry
Sweden can be reached by ferry from Denmark, Germany, Poland, Finland, the Baltic states and Norway. There is also the Öresund Bridge from Denmark, while domestic ferries connect the mainland with Gotland and other islands.
The shortest-looking crossing is not automatically the best route. Trelleborg, Malmö and Ystad suit southern Sweden; Gothenburg serves the west; Karlskrona and Karlshamn open up Blekinge; Nynäshamn points towards Stockholm; and Stockholm and Kapellskär are useful for Finland, Åland and the Baltic Sea.

Tested, not just listed
In 2025 we turned a short Copenhagen trip into a broader Denmark-Sweden ferry loop. We used the Puttgarden-Rødby shortcut, compared the Öresund Bridge with the Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry and saw how combi tickets and flexibility affect the route choice. We have not tested every Swedish corridor, so first-hand claims are limited to that journey.

Choose the route by starting point and Swedish destination
From Denmark: ferry, bridge or both
For many road trips from western Europe, Denmark is the quickest final approach to Sweden. The Öresund Bridge gives a continuous road connection from Copenhagen to Malmö, while the Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry is useful farther north.
- Öresund Bridge – normally the simplest option for Malmö and southern Sweden.
- Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry – a flexible alternative when your route already passes north of Copenhagen.
- Puttgarden-Rødby – a useful shortcut into Denmark when driving from Germany.
We tested this wider loop ourselves, including the ferry-versus-bridge decision. The best choice depends on the complete route and any useful combi ticket, not just the minutes spent on the water.
From Germany: comfort or a faster road route
Germany offers two fundamentally different approaches. Direct ferries can take you to Gothenburg or southern Swedish ports while you rest, whereas the route through Denmark uses shorter crossings and more driving.
- Kiel-Gothenburg – the comfortable overnight choice for western Sweden.
- Travemünde or Rostock-Trelleborg – direct access to southern Sweden.
- Puttgarden-Rødby plus Öresund – often the quickest combined road route, but with more time behind the wheel.

From Poland: choose Stockholm, Blekinge or Skåne
Poland has a broad direct ferry network to Sweden. The key decision is the Swedish arrival region:
- Nynäshamn for Stockholm and central Sweden;
- Karlshamn or Karlskrona for Blekinge and southern Sweden;
- Ystad or Trelleborg for Skåne, Malmö and onward travel towards Denmark.
The new Gdańsk-Karlshamn service adds a southern Swedish alternative to Gdańsk-Nynäshamn rather than simply duplicating it.
From Finland and the Baltic states
Stockholm and nearby Kapellskär are major gateways for ferries from Finland, Åland, Estonia and Latvia. Farther south, Karlshamn is linked with Klaipėda, while northern Sweden has the shorter Umeå-Vaasa connection across the Gulf of Bothnia.
These are different travel corridors rather than interchangeable ferries. Stockholm works for the capital and central Sweden, Kapellskär can reduce city driving, Karlshamn suits southern Sweden and Umeå is relevant only for much farther north.
From the UK to Sweden: there is no direct ferry
There is currently no direct passenger ferry between the UK and Sweden. The real decision is therefore where to enter mainland Europe and whether to prioritise less driving or a shorter sea crossing.
- Via the Netherlands: a useful first leg from eastern, central and northern Britain, followed by Germany and Denmark.
- Via France: often practical from southern Britain, but it leaves a longer continental drive.
- Direct Germany-Sweden ferry: adds another overnight crossing but can replace a substantial drive through Denmark.

Our Denmark-Sweden ferry and bridge loop
A quick Copenhagen trip became a broader FerryGoGo route test in 2025. We approached Scandinavia using the Puttgarden-Rødby ferry, crossed between Denmark and Sweden and compared the practical role of the Öresund Bridge with the Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry.

Combi tickets and flexibility mattered more than simply choosing the cheapest isolated crossing. That is why we compare the complete journey rather than declaring one universal winner.
Swedish islands and domestic ferries
Not every Swedish ferry is an international arrival route. Gotland has its own high-volume domestic network from the mainland, while many smaller archipelago services are local transport rather than alternatives for reaching Sweden from abroad.

Practical planning for a ferry to Sweden
