Getting to Comino and the Blue Lagoon
A boat trip to Comino and its Blue Lagoon is on almost every Malta holiday list. The Gozo Channel car ferry does not stop at Comino. Instead, publicly bookable passenger boats run by private, licensed operators sail from Ċirkewwa and Marfa at the northern tip of Malta, and from Mġarr on Gozo, in about 20 minutes. And since 2025 there is one extra step: a free time-slot pass for the Blue Lagoon.
Boat or day cruise?
Choose a direct boat if you mainly want to swim and relax, or a day cruise from Sliema or Buġibba if you want the sea caves, a snorkel stop or Gozo in the same day.

Comino lies between Malta and Gozo in the Gozo Channel. The Gozo Channel car ferry passes it on the way from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr but does not stop; the small boats to the Blue Lagoon do. Ċirkewwa is reached by bus from Valletta (routes 41 and 42, about 1h20 – 1h30), Sliema (route 222) and the airport (TD1).

The boats to Comino
Almost all boats land at the Blue Lagoon. Comino Ferries sails from Ċirkewwa every 30 minutes from 08:40 to 17:00 in season, with boats back from the Blue Lagoon until 17:00; there are also departures from Marfa and a few a day from Santa Marija Bay. A return costs €15 per adult (less online), and tickets stay valid for three months. You can also continue from the Blue Lagoon to Gozo for the same price and make your own way back to Malta on the Gozo ferry.
Other licensed operators sail from Marfa and from Mġarr on Gozo, and cruise companies run day trips from Sliema and Buġibba. Only use boats registered with Transport Malta; the official Blue Lagoon site links to the list of authorised vessels.

The Blue Lagoon: book your free slot
Since May 2025 the number of visitors at the Blue Lagoon has been capped at 4,000 at a time. To land, you need a free pass with a QR code, booked for a time slot on blcomino.com: morning (08:00 – 13:00), afternoon (13:30 – 17:30) or sunset (18:00 – 22:00). You exchange the QR code for a wristband on arrival.
- Book up to two months ahead, for up to four people per booking; bookings cannot be changed.
- Children under five do not need a pass.
- Some boat operators say their ticket includes landing access. Check that you receive a valid official QR pass for the right time slot; book one yourself only if it is not provided.
- The pass is for the managed Blue Lagoon area, not the whole island: walking through to other parts of Comino is allowed. Plan your boat back around your slot, especially for sunset visits.
- The lagoon is still busy in high season. For the clearest water and fewer people, go early in the morning or outside July and August.

The Comino Hotel has been closed for several years ahead of its redevelopment, so there is no hotel on the island at the moment and most visitors treat Comino as a day trip.
Can I go from Comino to Gozo?
Yes. Some operators let you continue from the Blue Lagoon to Gozo on the same ticket; from Gozo, the Gozo Channel ferry takes you back to Malta.

Get to Gozo by Ferry and pick up the Ferry to Comino from there, and yes you can take your motorbike with you and you won’t be the only one doing so! “If you’re arriving in Gozo with your own motorbike, you’ll be taking the ferry. The first thing to note is that motorbikes board the ferry before all other vehicles so feel free to jump the queue!”

Me and my girlfriend are planning on getting a ferry from Cirikewwa to Blue Lagoon, do we both require to bring our passports with us? I keep reading about it and I am not sure if we do have to or not?

You don’t need to bring your passport when travelLing from Cirkewwa to Blue Lagoon. Both locations are in Malta and within the Schengen Area, so passport checks aren’t required. However, you may be asked to show a form of ID, such as a driver’s license or ID card.
