Getting to Gozo by ferry
Two kinds of ferry go to Gozo, and they arrive at the same harbour, Mġarr. The Gozo Channel car ferry crosses from Ċirkewwa at the northern tip of Malta in about 25 minutes, day and night. The fast ferry takes foot passengers straight from Valletta in about 45 minutes, and since May 2026 also from Sliema and Buġibba.
Car ferry or fast ferry?
The car ferry from Ċirkewwa is the only option with a vehicle and runs all night. Without a car, the fast ferry from Valletta saves you the long bus ride to the north of Malta.

The map shows the two main links to Mġarr, from Ċirkewwa and Valletta; the newer fast-ferry route from Sliema and Buġibba is described below. Ċirkewwa is about 1h20 to 1h30 by bus from Valletta (routes 41 and 42) or from the airport (TD1), so if you are staying in or near Valletta without a car, the fast ferry is usually quicker overall.

Fast ferry from Valletta, Sliema and Buġibba to Gozo
Gozo Highspeed sails from Valletta (near Lascaris) to Mġarr in about 45 minutes, all year, roughly every hour from early morning until late evening; in summer there are extra late-night sailings at weekends. It is for foot passengers only, and bicycles travel free (up to nine per sailing). A one-way ticket costs €7.50 for adults and €3 for children aged 4 to 10.
Since 5 May 2026 there is also a route from Sliema via Buġibba to Gozo, about 1h15 from Sliema and 30 minutes from Buġibba, with around 13 departures a day. A single costs €8.50 from Sliema and €6.50 from Buġibba.
Car ferry from Ċirkewwa to Gozo
Gozo Channel sails Ċirkewwa to Mġarr in about 25 minutes, 24 hours a day: every 15 to 45 minutes during the day and about every 45 minutes at night, with around 45 departures each way a day. You do not need to book.

From gozochannel.com, October 2026. Gozo Channel tickets are validated only in Mġarr, on the Gozo side, not at Ċirkewwa, so in practice one ticket covers your crossing there and back. The car fare includes the driver; other people in the car pay the passenger fare. Car-and-driver tickets are sold online or at the booths in Mġarr. The fast-ferry fares above are one way.

Thanks for your question. The Cirkewwa-Mgarr ferry is running in October. For the Mgarr to Valleta crossing we can’t see past september yet. But we expect that one to be sailing as well.
I have tallinja explore flex card with gozo standard. Can I go with this card from Valetta to Gozo for free?

Meaning it will only provide a small discount, if you have the ExplorePlus package you can take the ferry for free. (Source)
Will they be a winter timetable for the Gozo ferry travelling to Gozo in December 2023 and back January 2034
Planning for 2034 will be difficult! =)
