Are Mini Cruises on a Ferry Really That Affordable? YES, and Here’s How!

Mini Cruises: A Short Getaway on a Cruise Ship or Ferry

Did you know that mini cruises are available not only on real cruise ships but also on luxurious cruise ferries? These ferries are designed with comfort and entertainment in mind, offering a fantastic experience at sea. The best part? Mini cruises on ferries are incredibly affordable—dare we say, even cheap—if you book wisely!

What Exactly Is a Mini Cruise on a Ferry?

A mini cruise typically involves a short trip of two nights aboard a ferry, giving you the chance to explore an exciting destination during the day. In some cases, you can extend your stay by one or two nights by booking a hotel at the destination—sometimes this is even included in the package.

Mini cruises are perfect for travellers without their own transport. Ferry operators often arrange transfers from the port to the destination you’d like to visit. This could be the port city itself or, in some cases, a nearby city that’s even more worth discovering.

Which Mini Cruises Can You Book from England?

The most well-known and popular mini cruises depart directly from England to destinations like the Netherlands for example. There’s also a mini cruise from Kiel (in Germany) to Copenhagen, although that one tends to be more expensive.

Below, you’ll find a selection of mini cruises we’ve found, along with their prices. It’s worth noting that prices can vary depending on the season. Autumn is typically cheaper than summer, and midweek departures are often more affordable than weekends.

3-Day Mini Cruise Newcastle–Amsterdam Starting at £51 per person.

With Ferry Operator DFDS: A Trip for Only £51 Per Person!

DFDS offers a trip starting at just £40 per person, which even includes a bus transfer from the port to the centre of Amsterdam! That’s incredibly affordable, isn’t it?

But does that cover everything? Not quite. You’ll probably want to eat and drink during your journey. A dinner buffet can be added for £25 per person, or you can decide to see what appeals to you once on board. If you’re on a budget, you could even share a sandwich or a snack.

As for onboard prices, we found them to be very reasonable—especially for drinks.

Advantages of a Mini Cruise

  • Convenient Transfers: Ferry operators typically arrange transport from the port to the city centre, often via a dedicated shuttle bus, making it easy to explore your destination.
  • Great Value for Money: Mini cruises are very competitively priced, especially when compared to standard return trips.
  • Efficient Travel: Since you travel overnight, you can cover a considerable distance without even noticing—you’re simply relaxing or sleeping. It’s a very comfortable way to travel.
  • Onboard Amenities: Ferries often come equipped with excellent facilities, such as restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment options.

Disadvantages of a Mini Cruise

  • No Personal Vehicle Allowed: Mini cruises are designed for foot passengers, meaning you can’t bring your own vehicle along.
  • Higher Onboard Food and Drink Prices: The cost of food and drinks on ferries is typically higher than what you’d pay at regular establishments on land. While prices vary between operators, they are generally fair and not unreasonable.
  • Limited Time at Your Destination: Mini cruises allow only a short window of time to explore the destination, which may feel limiting for some travellers.

Why Are Mini Cruises So Affordable?

There are several reasons why mini cruises can be offered at such low prices:

  • Scheduled Sailings Regardless of Demand
Ferries operate according to their timetable, even during less popular periods. Mini cruises provide a great way for ferry operators to fill extra spaces by offering attractive fares.
  • Spare Cabin Availability
Ferries often have a large number of cabins but limited capacity for vehicles and freight. This leaves extra cabins available, which can be filled with foot passengers.
  • Onboard Spending
Ferry operators anticipate that passengers will enjoy their time onboard and spend money on food, drinks, entertainment, the cinema, or even the casino.

In Conclusion

Finding the perfect deal might take a little time and perhaps some luck with ongoing promotions. Still, a mini cruise remains an affordable and enjoyable way to travel by ferry. Good luck hunting for a great offer, and have a fantastic time if you decide to go!
