Norway is a popular holiday destination and used to be easily accessible from the UK with direct connections such as the Newcastle-Bergen-Stavanger ferry; this route doesn't exist anymore, so now many UK passengers first travel to the Netherlands and then have to travel via Germany or Denmark to Norway.
There has been a ferry from the Netherlands to Norway from 2021 to 2023 but this was shortlived and moved to Emden, Whereafter this crossing has also been cancelled, meaning that the best alternatives are the ferries from Kiel to Oslo and from Hirtshals to Kristiansand. The Kiel Oslo ferry takes you from Germany to Norway in just 20 hours; what a comfortable start to your trip.

Step 1: The ferries to Holland / Netherlands
Whether you take theย ferry from Hull, Harwich orย Newcastle to The Netherlandsย does not matter much. This can best depend on the price and the travel distance to the departure port from your point of departure. Although the arrival of the Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry is slightly more northerly, it does not matter much regarding travel time to the ports of Kiel, or Hirtshals.

Travelling to Norway from the Netherlands
- Drive to (A) Kiel just in Germany and then take the ferry to Oslo in Norway; this is the most โlogical' crossing.
- Your second option is to drive to Denmark, Hirtshals and take the ferry to Norway. From Denmark, you can sail to several locations: Larvik, Bergen, Stavanger and more. You then still have the opportunity to travel back from Norway on the other route.
- Another option you haveย -at least one that makes sense-ย is to drive toย Frederikshavn and take a ferry to Norway. Then you're somewhat shorter on board the ferry and have more alternatives to choose from regarding arrival cities.
- You could also consider travellingย from Kiel, Germany, to Gothenburg, Swedenย if you're looking to combine a visit to both Sweden and Norway. From Gothenburg, you can then drive to Oslo, Norway, where you can take the ferry back.
- So, in short:
- (Kiel, Germany) will get you in Oslo
- (Hirtshals, DK) will get you into multiple locations in Norway, like inย Bergenย orย Kristiansand.
- (Frederikshavn, DK) will get you Oslo.
- Kiel (DE) also gets you to Gothenburg, Sweden, from where you can drive to Oslo and take the ferry back to Kiel.
Travel time by car after the first crossing
- From Rotterdam or Amsterdam to Kiel: ยฑ 6 hours
- Frin Rotterdam or Amsterdam to Frederikshavn:ยฑ 10 hours
- From Rotterdam or Amsterdam to Hirtshals ยฑ 10 hours
- Or ยฑ 15 hours to the Swedish/Norwegian border via the Oresund toll bridge.

Depending on where you live, Kiel Oslo is not only the shortest drive, for the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, and France, for example, it is also a really luxurious and comfortable ferry crossing. Combining two different routes, such as Kiel-Oslo and Hirtshals-Kristiansand can save you a lot of money and give you a better travel / road-trip experience.
Ferry from The Netherlands to Norway
You can travel from the Netherlands to Norway with the alternative for the Eemshaven-Kristiansand ferry connection:ย Kiel Oslo ferry,ย and start your vacation early. This ferry has all the luxury you need and is an enjoyable crossing for many. This is also the biggest problem of this route: since this cruise ferry is so popular, you need to book far in advance; the popularity also has a lot to do with the fact that this is a relatively new crossing.Driving to Germany for the ferry to Norway
Interesting routes to consider are the 20-hour ferry from Kiel to Oslo and the crossings from Hirtshals to Norway. The first one is a night crossing on the beautiful ship from Color Line.
You can also choose to combine this ferry with the Hirtshals-Kristiansand ferry that you sail with one of the ferries to Norway and the other route back. This can be especially handy when making a road or camper trip through Norway.
We recommend the ferry from Kiel to Oslo as it is a long ride from the UK, and it would be nice to get some rest during the trip.
Depending on which crossing you choose from the UK to the continent, the distance to Kiel is between 6 and 9 hours by car. You might also want to consider the ferry to Gothenburg; Norway is only a 3.5-hour drive from Gothenburg.
Driving to Denmark and the ferry from Denmark to Norway
The departure ports in northern Denmark are not just around the corner. Anyone taking a road trip to Scandinavia will undoubtedly benefit from one of these crossings or combining these routes with the ones mentioned earlier.
You can choose between various destinations depending on where the rest of your vacation or trip will take place. For example: Larvik, Kristiansand, Oslo and Bergen.ย
The advantage of travellingย from Denmark to Norway is mainly the short sailing time, which differs between 2 hours and 15 minutes and approximately 19 hours.
Ferry & Drive via Germany, Denmark, Copenhagen
The route with the least amount of miles on the ferry from the Netherlands to Norway, takes you via Puttgarden in Germany to Rodby in Denmark. This is a short 45-minute ferry that will bring you close to Copenhagen, from where you drive via the Oresund Bridge to Malmรถ and up north to Norway.
