If you want to get to Sardinia by boat (and car), you have a wide range of choices. You can sail from France (Nice), Spain (Barcelona), Corsica, Rome (Civitavecchia), Genoa, Livorno, and Naples to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia.
On most ferry crossings, you can bring your car, and many offer the option to take a night ferry to Sardinia. You can choose from various Sardinian port cities like Olbia, Porto Torres, and Golfo Aranci, or opt for the more southern port of Cagliari (via Naples or Palermo, Sicily).
Ferries from Italy to Sardinia
From Italy, you can book a crossing to Sardinia from several ports, including:
- Livorno to Olbia
- Genoa to Olbia or Porto Torres
- Civitavecchia (Rome) to Olbia
- Civitavecchia (Rome) to Cagliari
- Palermo to Cagliari
- Naples to Cagliari

You'll arrive in one of Sardinia's port cities, such as Olbia, Porto Torres, or Golfo Aranci. If you're sailing from Naples or Palermo (Sicily), Cagliari will likely be your port of destination.

There are numerous crossings between the Italian mainland and Sardinia's port cities, with ferries arriving in the north, south, and central parts of the island. You can choose your departure port based on your location in mainland Italy.

The roads in Sardinia can be somewhat dated, and travelling by car may take longer than expected. Therefore, it's often a good idea to book a ferry that docks close to your destination, even if it means the crossing takes a bit longer. This can save you valuable time on the road once you arrive.

From France, you can cross to Sardinia from the southern French coast, departing from the ports of Nice and Toulon. Popular crossings include:

Ferry from Corsica to Sardinia
Another option is to sail from the French island of Corsica to the Italian island of Sardinia. For example, you can travel from Ajaccio to Porto Torres or from Bonifacio to Santa Teresa di Gallura. This allows you to include both Corsica and Sardinia in a holiday that spans Italy and France. Itโs also quite close to the Tuscany region, making it easy to travel between these Mediterranean islands.

Ferry from Spain to Sardinia
You also have the option to sail from the Catalonian coast to Sardinia. From Barcelona, Spain, there is a direct ferry to Sardinia.
If you want to travel between Sardinia and Spain by ferry, you can take the ferry from Barcelona to Porto Torres or vice versa.
The ferry from Barcelona to Porto Torres takes about 12.5 hours to reach the Sardinian port of Porto Torres. On this route, you'll be sailing with one of the ferries operated by Grimaldi Lines.
Travelling and Staying in Sardinia
Taking the ferry to Sardinia is an excellent alternative to flying, especially since flights to the island can be quite pricey. Bringing your own car can be particularly convenient, given the rising costs of rental vehicles in recent years. Sardinia boasts a rich culture, stunning beaches, and unspoiled natural landscapes.
When travelling to Sardinia by ferry, you can arrive at several coastal port cities, including Porto Torres, Arbatax, Cagliari, Olbia, Golfo Aranci, or Santa Teresa di Gallura.
If you're driving, make sure to arrive at the port on time. Summer can be hectic on the southern French and northern Italian roads, as well as at the ferry terminals. Itโs wise to plan your route carefully, and you might even consider staying overnight at one of the departure ports to ensure you reach the ferry on time.
