The crossings to Elba are short, with ferries frequently coming and going. The fastest ferry reaches the village of Cavo in just 15 minutes. However, most ferries travel between Piombino and Portoferraio, the capital of Elba, with crossing times varying from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Since the time differences between the various ferries are minimal and you won’t have much time to enjoy the onboard facilities, we recommend choosing the cheapest option.
Departure from Piombino
Ferries frequently come and go at the port of Piombino. The signage directing you to the correct ferry is clear, and there are plenty of staff in the harbour to guide you to the right parking space.
The roads to and from the port can be quite busy, so keep this in mind if you need to catch a ferry. If you still need to arrange anything, you can do so at one of the desks at the beginning of the port, where you can also purchase tickets on-site.

Another tip is to try to travel during off-peak times – not only will you save money on your ferry ticket, but you'll also avoid the crowds of tourists who tend to flock to Elba during the summer months. Plus, you'll have more room to stretch out on the ferry – ahoy, matey!
