The deal in one line

Brittany Ferries mini-cruises: two or three nights at sea with time ashore in Spain or France, from £99 per person. The cheapest way to try one of their big cruise ferries.

A mini-cruise is not really about the destination. It is about the ship: a cabin, dinner on board, a show in the evening and a morning on deck. Brittany Ferries runs a handful of these, from simple round trips to Santander to themed cruises.

We sailed Plymouth – Santander on Pont-Aven ourselves, with three young children. Read how that went in our Pont-Aven review.

Our tip

Check what is included before you book: on some mini-cruises your time ashore is only a few hours, and meals and cabin upgrades can add up. The Bay of Biscay can also be lively outside summer, so pick a cabin in the middle of the ship if you are prone to seasickness.

Our verdict

A fun, affordable way to experience a cruise ferry, especially Pont-Aven from Plymouth. Think of it as a short break at sea rather than a trip to Spain.
