Coming from the UK? No ferry sails from Britain to Scandinavia any more; the last one, Newcastle to Bergen, stopped in 2008. You cross the North Sea to the Netherlands from Harwich, Hull or Newcastle, or the Channel at Dover, and pick up a second ferry in Germany or Denmark. The practical route for each country is in ferry to Norway from the UK, ferry to Sweden from the UK and ferry to Denmark from the UK. Two developments to follow: plans for a new Newcastle to Norway ferry, and Stena’s agreement to buy Color Line, which puts the Harwich ferry and the Kiel to Oslo ferry under one owner from 2027.

Ferry routes to and within Scandinavia
Scandinavia is one of the few parts of Europe where the ferry is often the sensible way in, not the romantic one. This page treats it as one area: the ferries to and between Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, with the overnight ships from Germany and the short Baltic crossings that link them. The map shows the geography; the guides below tell you which crossing fits where you are going.
Our take
Three things we would say to anyone planning this from Britain. First, pick the Norway or Sweden ferry before the North Sea crossing, not the other way round: Harwich, Hull and Newcastle all land you within a day of Kiel, so the second ship decides the route. Second, do not drive through Denmark to save the fare: the Puttgarden to Rødby and Gedser to Rostock crossings, both of which we have driven, cost less than the Storebælt bridge toll and the extra fuel, and the night boats from Kiel replace a hotel. Third, the overnight ships are the holiday, not the obstacle; the Copenhagen to Oslo crossing we sailed on the Crown and Pearl ships is worth doing even if a quicker route exists.
