Italy to Corfu by ferry

Corfu is the first Greek island you reach from Italy, and in summer three or four ferries a day sail there from Brindisi, Bari and Ancona. The high season runs from May to early or mid-September. All three routes carry cars, campers and motorbikes, which is the point of them: you drive down Italy, sleep on the ship and wake up in the Ionian with your own car. The detail per route is below the map.

Our take

Which port depends on how far you want to drive in Italy. From the UK, Ancona is the shortest drive and the longest sailing; the ship does the rest of the work overnight, and with a cabin it is the most comfortable way to arrive. Brindisi is the opposite: another 500 km of autostrada for a crossing short enough to do by day. Bari sits in between and is the one we would pick with children, because the overnight is long enough to sleep properly but you are in Corfu for breakfast. Book early for July and August; the car decks fill before the cabins do.

Five things to know about Corfu before you book

  1. Corfu is the seventh-largest Greek island.
  2. The main town is also called Corfu, and it is worth a day in itself.
  3. The island has 115 beaches, so pick your base by coast: the west for sand and sunsets, the north-east for coves and the ferry to Albania.
  4. Its Greek name is Kerkyra, which is what you will see on tickets and road signs.
  5. It is the westernmost point of Greece and the northernmost of the Ionian Islands, which is why it is the natural first stop from Italy.

  1. Do I need a passport when I travel from Italy to Corfu? I want to go there with Ventouris Ferries in July this year / we are a British family of 4.
