Capri is a day-trip island, and the boats are built for it: fast ferries and hydrofoils from Naples, Sorrento, Salerno and the Amalfi Coast, plus a link with neighbouring Ischia. All of them land at Marina Grande. This guide covers which port to leave from, how long it takes and what to know before you board.

- Main ports: Naples, Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia, with seasonal sailings from Salerno, Positano and Amalfi.
- Fastest: hydrofoils from Sorrento in about 20 to 25 minutes; from Naples 45 to 80 minutes depending on the boat.
- Operators: Alilauro, SNAV, NLG and Caremar, frequent from April to October.
- Cars: non-resident vehicles are not allowed on Capri for most of the season; go as a foot passenger.
- Arrival: Marina Grande, with the funicular up to Capri town and the island buses.
- Tip: book early in summer and take an early boat to get the most of the day.

Several ports serve Capri. Most boats go direct; some call at smaller villages on the way.
About the crossings to Capri
The coast road is slow, so the right port is the one nearest your base. From the small villages the boats leave in the morning only; from the big ports fast ferries run all day. The usual departure points:

- Cetara to Capri (Alicost): one morning departure a day.
- Maiori to Capri (Alicost): one a day, about 1 hour 40 minutes.
- Minori to Capri (Alicost): one a day, about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Ischia to Capri (Alilauro): two a day, 40 to 50 minutes.

What is the shortest crossing to Capri?
From Sorrento. The island is about 14 km (8 miles) off Sorrento, and the fastest hydrofoil takes around 20 minutes.

Before you sail
- Book ahead: the morning boats from Naples and Sorrento fill up in summer.
- Arrive early: 30 to 45 minutes before departure in peak season.
- Pack light: space on the hydrofoils is tight and big suitcases may cost extra.
- Cars and campers: non-resident vehicles are banned on Capri from April to October. Park in Naples or Sorrento.
- Weather: in rough seas the hydrofoils are cancelled first; the slower ferries keep going longer.
- Marina Grande: ticket desks, left luggage, taxis and the funicular are all at the harbour.
- Timing: early boats are calmer and emptier; the late-afternoon return queues are long on sunny days, so book the return in advance.
