Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry: our route verdict

The Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry is the northernmost direct ferry from England to the Netherlands. That makes it particularly useful from North East England, Northumberland and Scotland, where driving several hours south simply to take a shorter ferry rarely improves the complete journey.

The first thing to understand is that the ferry does not arrive in Amsterdam itself. DFDS sails between North Shields, near Newcastle, and IJmuiden on the Dutch coast. Amsterdam is around 30 kilometres away, with a bookable DFDS coach connecting the ferry terminal with the city centre.

This is the longest of the three direct UK-Netherlands crossings, but that is not necessarily a disadvantage. You board in the afternoon, use the ship during the evening, sleep in your cabin and arrive the following morning. For a road trip from northern Britain, it can replace both a long drive south and a night of accommodation.

Our verdict: this is the Netherlands ferry we would compare first from Newcastle, Northumberland and much of Scotland. From Yorkshire or the Midlands, Hull-Rotterdam is often more logical; from London and East Anglia, start with Harwich-Hook of Holland.

We have travelled this route ourselves. In July 2024, Jan Willem travelled from IJmuiden to Newcastle with DFDS on Princess Seaways, together with two young children. We travelled as foot passengers and stayed in a 4-person sea-view cabin. We use that experience here for practical context; the full journey is covered separately in our first-hand review.

Newcastle-IJmuiden crossing at a glance

DFDS operates the Newcastle-Amsterdam route as a daily overnight crossing. The sailing takes about 15 hours 45 minutes to IJmuiden and 16 hours 45 minutes back under the standard timetable; the difference is the hour you gain or lose crossing the time zone.

Netherlands port IJmuiden, around 30 km west of Amsterdam
Crossing Overnight: about 15h45 to IJmuiden, 16h45 back
Ships King Seaways and Princess Seaways
Vehicles Cars, motorbikes, campervans, motorhomes and bicycles
Foot passengers Yes
Best suited to North East England, Northumberland and Scotland

The ships were refurbished in 2024, including renewed cabins and refreshed public areas. Exact sailing times can change, so use the timetable further down this page for planning and your DFDS booking confirmation as the final reference.

DFDS is the only operator on this route

The Newcastle-IJmuiden crossing is operated exclusively by DFDS. You can travel with or without a vehicle, and every booking includes overnight accommodation in a private cabin.

This makes the fare slightly harder to compare with a short Channel ferry. The price depends on passenger numbers, vehicle, cabin category, travel date and any meals or extras you add.

Rather than choosing this route on the headline fare alone, we would compare the complete journey cost. From northern Britain, Newcastle can save a significant amount of fuel, driving time and potentially a hotel night compared with travelling south before crossing the Channel.

Newcastle-Amsterdam as a mini-cruise

This route can also be booked as a mini-cruise, usually with two nights on board and time in Amsterdam between the crossings. In that case, the ferry journey itself becomes part of the short break rather than simply transport to the Netherlands.

It is a good fit for this format because the crossing is long enough to use the restaurants, bars and entertainment before sleeping on board. The following morning, DFDS runs a coach between IJmuiden and Amsterdam city centre.

The important practical detail is again the location: you do not step off the ferry beside Amsterdam Centraal. Build the coach times into your plans: on a mini-cruise the transfer is included, on a standalone crossing it is an add-on.

Mini cruise in short

Two nights on board and a day in Amsterdam, from £90 per person. On a mini-cruise the return coach between IJmuiden and the city is included in the package price. Time ashore depends on border control on arrival, so plan your day flexibly. Via FerryGoGo you get 33% off the Amsterdam mini cruise.

What does the Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry cost?

Fares are dynamic: the price depends on your dates, the number of passengers, your vehicle, the cabin and any meals you add. Every booking includes a cabin, so compare it with a Channel crossing plus a hotel night, not with the ferry fare alone. To give you an idea:

TicketPrice, one way*
Cheapest farefrom about £74 per person
Foot passenger with a cabintypically about £150 to £200
Car with passengers and a cabintypically about £600 to £700
Mini cruise (2 nights on board, return)from £90 per person, return coach transfers to Amsterdam included

*“From” prices as shown by DFDS; ranges are typical one-way fares in October 2026, excluding booking fees. School holidays and summer weekends cost more.

Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry timetable

DFDS currently operates the route daily. The standard 2026 timetable is:

Direction Check-in closes Departure Arrival
Newcastle-IJmuiden 16:15 17:00 09:45 next morning
IJmuiden-Newcastle 16:45 17:30 09:15 next morning

All times are local. The Netherlands is one hour ahead of the UK. Timetables can change due to operational or weather conditions, so always use the times on your own booking confirmation as the final reference.

Do not aim for the check-in deadline. On a crossing this long, arriving earlier gives you time to board, find the cabin and settle in before departure. DFDS currently closes normal check-in 45 minutes before sailing.

On board King Seaways and Princess Seaways

DFDS uses King Seaways and Princess Seaways on this route. They are often described as cruise ferries because there is considerably more on board than on a short Channel crossing.

Both ships have private cabins, restaurants, bars, shopping, cinema and entertainment areas. For families there are children’s facilities and activities, while seasonal wildlife activities may also operate on selected sailings.

For us, the important point is not the length of the facilities list. On a crossing of around 16 hours, it helps to have different places to go before bedtime. You can eat, walk on deck, let children move around and then retreat to the cabin rather than spending the whole journey in one seat.

If you want the detailed onboard experience, including our cabin, dinner, breakfast and travelling with two young children, use our first-hand Princess Seaways review.

Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry: what the crossing is actually like

The Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry is one of those crossings that makes much more sense once you have actually done it. On paper it is long - about 15 to 16 hours at sea. But that is also the whole trick. You board in the afternoon, find your ...

Which cabin should you book?

A private cabin is part of the overnight Newcastle-Amsterdam journey. DFDS offers several categories, including Economy, inside and sea-view cabins, double-bed cabins, accessible cabins and pet-friendly options.

For most travellers, we would choose primarily by occupancy, bed layout and whether a window matters to you. The crossing is long enough that the cabin is more than somewhere to leave a bag.

What worked for us

We travelled as four in a standard sea-view cabin on Princess Seaways. It was compact, but having daylight and a view made the small cabin feel less enclosed. With two young children sharing the space, we appreciated that more than we expected.

If you are travelling with very young children, check the bed layout before booking. On our trip, bed rails were available for the bunk beds and were useful enough that we would arrange them again.

Deck plan: useful before the ship gets busy

On a large overnight ferry, checking the deck plan once you reach your cabin saves quite a bit of wandering around later. Find the restaurants, children’s facilities, outside decks and the quickest route back to your cabin before the public areas become busy.

Is Newcastle the right Netherlands ferry for you?

The route is strongest when the northerly UK departure saves you a substantial drive before boarding.

  • North East England and Northumberland: Newcastle-IJmuiden is normally the natural Netherlands crossing to compare first.
  • Scotland: Newcastle can be much more logical than driving to Hull, Harwich or Dover before you even reach the ferry.
  • Yorkshire and the Midlands: compare Hull-Rotterdam.
  • London and East Anglia: Harwich-Hook of Holland is usually the better fit.

Our UK-Netherlands ferry comparison puts all three routes side by side. We have travelled all three ourselves.

Why this route works particularly well for Scotland

One of the strongest reasons to choose Newcastle-IJmuiden is not Amsterdam at all – it is the location of Newcastle.

If you are travelling from Scotland to the Netherlands, or from the Netherlands towards Scotland, Newcastle avoids taking the journey hundreds of miles south before crossing the North Sea. That can make the longer ferry crossing the more relaxed option overall.

Our own trip was in the IJmuiden-Newcastle direction, and arriving in northern England changed how we looked at the route. You wake up with the sea crossing already behind you and can continue north without first crossing southern England.

That is why we would judge this ferry on total driving time plus overnight travel, rather than comparing the sailing duration in isolation.

Ports, transfers, luggage and pets

Newcastle ferry terminal

The ferry terminal is actually in North Shields, east of Newcastle city centre:

International Passenger Terminal
Royal Quays
North Shields
NE29 6EE

Drivers can park at the terminal or continue directly through vehicle check-in. For foot passengers, DFDS runs a bus between the terminal and Newcastle city centre, stopping near Newcastle Central Station. The journey normally takes around 20-30 minutes.

IJmuiden ferry terminal

The Dutch terminal is:

Felison Terminal
Sluisplein 33
1975 AG IJmuiden
Netherlands

IJmuiden is west of Amsterdam rather than in the city itself. DFDS runs a bookable coach to Amsterdam, dropping passengers behind Amsterdam Central Station. Allow roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic.

Foot passenger? Book the transfer when you book the ferry. The city transfer is an important part of this route. Do not choose Newcastle-Amsterdam on the assumption that the ferry docks beside Amsterdam Centraal.

Luggage

One of the advantages of travelling by ferry is that there is no airline-style luggage routine. With a vehicle, you can carry considerably more than you would on a flight. Foot passengers should still travel practically: you need to carry your own bags through the terminal and onto any city transfer.

Bicycles

Bicycles can travel on this route. Add the bicycle correctly when making the booking so DFDS knows how you are travelling and can allocate the appropriate boarding arrangement.

Travelling with a dog

DFDS offers both pet-friendly cabins and onboard kennels on Newcastle-Amsterdam. Pet-friendly cabins currently accommodate up to four people and two medium-sized dogs, and there are designated outside areas where dogs can be taken during the crossing.

Book pet accommodation with the crossing rather than assuming you can add it at the port. Also check the current animal health and entry requirements for your direction of travel.

Practical tips before you travel

  • Book dinner if eating on board matters to you. On a long overnight crossing the evening goes quickly. On our family trip, having a restaurant time sorted in advance made the evening easier.
  • With young children, ask about bed rails. We used them with the bunk beds in our cabin. For very young children, think through the sleeping arrangement before boarding rather than once everyone is tired.
  • Download entertainment before sailing. Do not rely on mobile roaming at sea, and do not assume standard onboard Wi-Fi will be suitable for streaming.
  • Keep your boarding card handy. On our trip it also worked as the cabin key.
  • Bedding and towels are provided. There is no need to waste luggage space bringing your own for a standard cabin.
  • Allow time after arrival. Foot passengers still need the bus transfer and, where applicable, border formalities before reaching Newcastle or Amsterdam city centre.
