Ferry to Norway from Germany

Getting to Norway from Germany

Norway used to be easily accessible with direct connections, such as the Newcastle-Bergen-Stavanger ferry. Unfortunately, there are no direct ferries from Scotland or England to Norway these days, so you first have to get to the continent.

Ferries from Germany to Norway?

So you first have to get to the continent. This is possible with one of the two ferries to Holland (from Hull or Newcastle). From there, you can drive up to Kiel for the direct ferry to Oslo or travel via the Danish ferries from Hirtshals, Copenhagen, or Frederikshavn.

You can use the booking module and select Germany (or Denmark) to find the crossings to Norway.

Ferry Guide Norway from Germany

Ferries from Germany to Norway

If you want toย travel from Germany to Norway, there are several ways to do so. You can drive all the way there via a number of bridges, but most people who travel from Germany to Norway choose a ferry somewhere along the route. You can choose between long crossings with little driving or short crossings with lots of driving. We would be happy to explain all options. For this, it is useful to first look at the ferry route map.

The ferryย from Emden to Kristiansandย stopped sailing so there is only one long-distance connection left to Norway from Germany: the ferry fromย Kiel to Oslo:ย  a very comfortable ferry crossing on a cruise ferry, which is a ferry with lots of luxury and entertainment on board.

There is also a boat to Oslo from Copenhagen (Denmark) but you have to go to Copenhagen first. That is somewhat less attractive.

Those who like to drive more themselves can choose toย drive to the north of Denmark. From the German border near Flensburg, this distance is about 350 km. In northern Denmark, you will find the ports of Hirtshals and Frederikshavn. From here, there are ferry services to Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, and the south coast of Norway.

Another option for self-drivers is toย go through Sweden. From southern Sweden to the Norwegian border, it is about 500 kilometers. You do have to get into Sweden first. This can be done with a direct ferry connection, but you can also go to Sweden via Denmark.

We would be happy to explain all your options in more detail further down this pageย โฌ‡๏ธ

Travel tip Norway

Make sure to check the weather forecast before you go. The weather in Norway can be unpredictable and itโ€™s important to be prepared for any conditions. Also, make sure to bring warm clothing and rain gear just in case. Finally, donโ€™t forget your camera! Norway is a beautiful country with stunning scenery that you wonโ€™t want to miss.

Cruising in Comfort: long-distance ferry options from Germany to Norway

The Kiel-Oslo crossing with Color Line operates overnight. Given the length of the journey, there are numerous activities to enjoy on board. You will find a variety of restaurants, entertainment venues, and activities for children. A major advantage of these cruise ferries is that your holiday begins as soon as you step aboard, allowing you to enjoy a comfortable journey throughout your trip.

You can also sail from Kiel to Oslo on your way to Norway and take another ferry back via Denmark, as many ferries operate to and from Norway.

As boats fill up, they often become more expensive. It can be worthwhile to compare these two ferry options. If it fits into your schedule, consider checking if another departure day might be cheaper.

Book these ferries as far in advance as possible if you can! This can make a significant difference in price.

Drive from Germany to Norway via Sweden

There are several ways to reach southern Sweden, but they can be roughly divided into two main routes.

You can drive all the way to Norway via the bridge between Denmark and Sweden, which connects the cities of Copenhagen and Malmรถ. While it is possible to drive to Copenhagen, many people prefer to take the shorter and relatively cheaper ferry crossings from Rostock to Gedser or Puttgarden to Rรธdby. Please note that a toll is required for the motorway to Copenhagen. If you purchase a ticket with Scandlines for these crossings, you can also buy a ticket for the bridge at the same time.

The second route involves taking one of several ferries that go directly from northeastern Germany to Sweden. Keep in mind that upon arrival in Sweden, you will still have more than 310 miles (500 kilometres) to drive if you are heading towards Norway.
