Ferries to Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the island in the middle of the chain and the second most visited after Tenerife. Locals call it a continent in miniature for the range of landscapes in a day’s drive, and for ferries it is the pivot between the two halves of the archipelago: west to Tenerife, east to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Las Palmas, the capital, is the main port (Puerto de la Luz); the only other ferry port is Agaete (Puerto de las Nieves) on the west coast, used solely by the Tenerife fast ferries.

What makes it easy: Naviera Armas and Fred. Olsen Express compete on the main routes, which keeps fares reasonable; the ships are modern and mostly fast, some of them among the fastest catamaran ferries anywhere; three islands have direct sailings to Gran Canaria, as does mainland Spain; and most routes run more than once a day.

Travel tip: Las Palmas vs the South

Las Palmas is the largest city in all of the Canary Islands, which means it's well connected with the other islands and there is much to do. Tourist-wise, many visitors head for the dry south of the island. Las Palmas is more a city for the locals while Maspalomas is much more tourist-heavy.

From Tenerife to Gran Canaria

Two crossings, both from Santa Cruz de Tenerife: to Agaete on the west coast in about 80 minutes on Fred. Olsen’s fast catamarans, the Bentago Express among them, and to Las Palmas in around 100 minutes. Agaete is the quicker crossing but leaves you on the far side of the island from the capital; Las Palmas lands you in the city.
