By boat to Formentera
Formentera has no airport, so everyone arrives by sea, most of them from Ibiza and many just for the day. That means plenty of sailings and four companies to choose from, and it is why the fares for a 30-minute crossing are higher than you would expect.
From Ibiza Town the crossing to La Savina takes about 30 minutes, with dozens of sailings a day in summer and a much thinner timetable in winter. You can also sail from Dénia on the Spanish mainland with Baleària: about two hours on the fast ferry, or up to four and a half hours on sailings that call at Ibiza first.

All routes at a glance
Four companies sail to Formentera, each with several crossings a day; in high season the boats come and go constantly. They are Baleària, Aquabus, Trasmapi and Formentera Lines.
Which ferry company to choose
From Dénia there is only Baleària. From Ibiza you have the choice, and the boats differ. Aquabus and Formentera Lines run cheaper, smaller passenger boats that are popular with day trippers: sail over at a fixed time in the morning and pick your return later. Trasmapi has a larger ferry with a sun deck that also carries cars; Baleària runs car ferries and smaller passenger boats. All four use fast catamarans, so the crossing time is much the same.

For most people price and a convenient departure time decide it. Fares are high for the distance and vary a lot between companies and times, so compare before you buy. The photos below were taken on our day trip from Ibiza to Formentera.

What we learned on our own trip
We have done the Ibiza to Formentera crossing ourselves, and a few practical things stood out.
Parking in Ibiza for the Formentera ferry
On Ibiza most people drive to Ibiza Town for the boat. There is a large car park about 150 metres from the port, Pàrquing Es Pratet (Google Maps). It is not cheap, we paid €32 for the day, but it is convenient.

Can you buy tickets at the port?
Yes, and you will see the adverts from the car park onwards; Trasmapi sometimes has a stand next to the parking machine. With four companies and several crossing types it is hard to compare on the spot, so you can easily overpay. Buy in advance, especially in summer when the boats fill.
Getting around Formentera
Taxis and buses wait at the arrival terminal in La Savina, and there are plenty of stands for scooters and cars. The longest distance on the island is about 19 km, from the port to the Faro de la Mola lighthouse, so a bike works well and e-bikes and ordinary bikes are easy to rent. The bus back to the ferry gets crowded
The queue for the bus from Platja de Ses Illetes back to the port was long when we were there. If you need a specific return sailing, be at the stop well ahead of time.
Cheapest crossing
Prices move with the time of day, but Aquabus is usually the cheapest.
Cancelled crossings off-season
Outside summer some sailings stop running and this is not always communicated well. Check your return sailing in particular before you set off.
