Isle of Mull ferries
Three CalMac ferries take cars to Mull, and which one you want depends on where you are coming from. Oban to Craignure is the main route and the one most visitors use; Lochaline to Fishnish is a short hop from the Morvern peninsula; and Tobermory to Kilchoan links the north of Mull with Ardnamurchan.

Practical tips for the Oban ferry
- Everyone needs a ticket before travel, foot passengers included. CalMac advises booking online in advance.
- Check-in closes 30 minutes before departure for vehicles and 10 minutes for foot passengers.
- Motorhomes, campervans and caravans should have a pitch booked on Mull before travelling, at the request of Argyll & Bute Council.
- Check for disruption. The Mull route has had several amended timetables in 2026 because of vessel overhauls and problems with the passenger access system at Craignure, so look at CalMac’s service status before you set off.
Iona, Staffa and the islands around Mull
Iona is a 10-minute crossing from Fionnphort, about an hour’s drive across Mull from Craignure. Only foot passengers can book online; every vehicle on Iona needs a permit from Argyll & Bute Council, so leave the car at Fionnphort.
Staffa and the Treshnish Isles, with Fingal’s Cave and puffins in early summer, are reached on boat trips from Fionnphort, Iona, Ulva Ferry and Tobermory. Landings depend on the swell and are never guaranteed.
Ulva has its own small foot-passenger ferry from Ulva Ferry on the west coast, on demand during the day. Coll and Tiree are reached directly from Oban.

The Mull ferry arrives at Oban
Mull is the second-largest island of the Inner Hebrides and one of the best places in Britain to see wildlife: white-tailed eagles, otters, red deer and seals, and in summer whales, dolphins and basking sharks offshore. Tobermory, with its coloured harbour front, is the main town; Craignure, where the Oban ferry arrives, is little more than the pier, a shop and Duart Castle down the road.
Roads on Mull are largely single-track with passing places, so allow more time than the distance suggests: Craignure to Fionnphort for the Iona ferry is about 35 miles.

All the car ferries to Mull are run by CalMac (Caledonian MacBrayne): Oban to Craignure, Lochaline to Fishnish and Tobermory to Kilchoan. Boat trips to Staffa and the small Ulva ferry are run by local operators.
Oban to Craignure takes 45 to 50 minutes, depending on the ship.
For Oban to Craignure, yes: everyone needs a ticket before travel and CalMac advises booking online in advance, especially with a car. Lochaline to Fishnish and Tobermory to Kilchoan are turn up and go.
In winter 2026/27 Oban to Craignure costs £4.90 per adult and £18.20 per car, single, with the driver paying the passenger fare on top. Lochaline to Fishnish costs £3.40 per adult and £9.85 per car.
Not without a permit. All vehicles on Iona need a permit from Argyll & Bute Council, so most visitors park at Fionnphort and cross as foot passengers in about 10 minutes.

Hi
We are travelling from Australia to UK in September, and we are after ferry info that has sailing times between Tobermory and Kilchoan. We need to be in Fort William by 12.30pm on Sunday Sept 24th , so would need to catch a 9am ferry that day – I can’t see what time the ferry crossings start, the ferry company just says “available all day”

We double-checked, and the first ferry from Tobermory to Kilchoan departs at 7:20, there is also a ferry leaving at 9:30. If you pick that one you arrive at Kichoan at 10:05, it will be a 2-hour drive (at least) so you will arrive at ~12:15 at Fort William. The timing all depends a bit on how strict the 12:30 is. If you take the 7:20 you’ll have much more time to take it easy =)

Hi everyone, is the ferry Oban-Craignure available all year? We are arriving from Spain on 27th Nov and on their website there is no timetable beyond the 22nd!

Hello – wanting to book ferry from Oban to Isle of Mull with a vehicle. Question is, do I purchase a ‘vehicle’ ticket by itself or do I also need to buy 2 passenger tickets (as well as the car ticket)? Guess that depends if you are allowed to sit in your car? Just wanting to buy now. Thank you!
